The Millhouse c.1801, on 2.8 beautifully landscaped acres in rural Carroll County, is an extraordinary historic home with spacious rooms, historic detailing & modern amenities. A separate one bedroom apartment adds versatility and the large 2 story sun room offers elegance and light. The kitchen features Jenn-aire appliances and a cozy breakfast area near the hearth and wood stove. Originally the miller’s house for the historic Mayberry Mill, which still stands across Stone Road on another property and served the community grinding flour and feed from 1860 – 1945 powered by Big Pipe Creek. This is a home of rare and beautiful distinction.

A HISTORY OF MAYBERRY MILL

Ruth Halter Strevig – A recollection of living in the Millhouse from 1927 – 1944 from “Mills & Memories”

In 1860, Big Pipe Creek Mill (Mayberry Mill), was built by Jacob Maus, a German immigrant, in what was then Frederick County. The mill was and now is four stories high, a 40 x 60 foot building assembled from handhewn timbers with pin and peg construction. The mill has been known as: Big Pipe Creek Mill, Halter’s Mill, Marker’s Mill (still labeled this on some maps), and Mayberry Mill due to its location at the intersection of Mayberry and Stone Roads.

This was a flour and feed mill, one of 89 mills that existed in Carroll County at one time. Not allof these mills grist grain. Flour from the mill once supplied a cracker factory in Wilkes Barre, Pa and bakeries in Baltimore, Md.

Local farmers brought their wheat, oats, barley, soybeans, and corn to the mill to be ground into feed for their livestock. Some of these grains were also grist into flour and cornmeal.

The mill’s power source was Big Pipe Creek, dammed at one location to increase its force. There is little evidence of it today, but a race about a !4 mile in length joined the creek and the mill, with water flowing into the basement of the mill and over a turbine. A turbine or horizontal water wheel powered the pulley systems, belts, and a grinding stone in the mill. There was a secondary smaller water wheel that supplied water to the house located above the mill.

The mill race was cleaned, generally once a year in the spring. A horse pulling a V-shaped implement was inside the race with a mule on the race bank. Water would have been stopped at the dam site. People came with pants rolled up or in bathing suits grabbing fish from the race with their hands and throwing them into washtubs on the banks.

It is believed the mill burned in 1906 and was rebuilt by John Marker. Not knowing the fire’s cause one could assume it was grain chaff and dust, by-products of the gristing process. Fire was always a real concern for mill owners. It is no longer gristing grain, its waterwheel having turned its last in 1945.

The above is an excerpt from a document that references the following credits:

“We have Ruth Halter Strevig, Homer Fleagle, Charlotte Halter Iacona, and Mildred Halter Duke to thank for sharing pieces of the mill’s history, their own stories, and photos. Other than Homer, these women called the homestead at Maybemy Mill home. Some of the information for this document was also gleaned from Joan Prall’s book: Mills and Memories.”

Description
Wilson’s Inheritance is a mid-19th century farmstead that illustrates an affluent agricultural complex of central Maryland. The property retains numerous period outbuildings and the architectural character of the 1832-38 farmhouse presents a variation on the regional Pennsylvania farmhouse that indicates the prosperity of its original owner. This variation consists of an inset, double-tiered porch in the central two bays of the six-bay main facade. Other exterior features of the house, such as its L-shaped plan, stone foundation, common bond brickwork (Flemish bond on the main facade), gable roof, ornamentation, and its siting into a slope, are characteristic of farmhouse construction in Carroll and surrounding counties. However, the interior of the house displays more elaborate ornamentation in the mantelpieces, chair rails, door frames, and other woodwork than is typically found in the regional farmhouses. The total farm complex, that includes a bank barn, blacksmith shop, wash house, smokehouse, chicken houses, sheds, and a privy, is relatively intact and represents a large and prosperous farming operation of the mid-19th century.

History
Wilson’s Inheritance presents a farmhouse and farmstead that embodies the distinctive characteristics of the early-to-mid 19th century in Piedmont Maryland. The farmhouse, built in 1837-38, represents several features of the typical Pennsylvania farmhouse in style and construction, but includes significant variations in its main facade design, floor plan, and interior ornamentation that indicate the affluence of the original owner. From 1875 to 1974, the farm was owned by the Francis J. Englar and Francis J. Englar, Jr., families who were influential farmers and citizens of this region. The Englar family enlarged the barn and remodeled several rooms in the farmhouse to rural Victorian-style standards. Overall, the farm complex retains almost all of its 19th century buildings and the significant 19th century features of these structures, including an abundance of period hardware. The complex possesses infinite material for the study of agriculture and rural architecture in central Maryland.

During the American Civil War, the population of Carroll County was sharply divided between supporters of the Union and the Confederacy.
HISTORY

Built in 1769 for Jacob Funk, this was the home of the town’s founder and the oldest dated house in Funkstown. It is a two story, four bay stone structure, built of relatively small, carefully cut stones at the facade typical of the 1760′s and 1770′s in Washington County. A stone water table, also an 18th century feature spans the front of the house. First story windows and the door are topped with segmental arches, typical of pre-1780 stone construction in Washington County. The windows and some of the window frames have been replaced. They now have two over two pane sash, some with arched tops. The main entrance is located in the third bay from the east end of the house. It may retain its original framing and includes a narrow transom. The entrance is sheltered by a one bay porch which probably dates from the 1860′s or 1870′s. The east gable end end has an added double porch with entrances at the first and second story levels. A wind extends to the rear.

Jacob Funk sold the house and moved to Kentucky in 1791. In addition to founding Funkstown, Jacob Funk was a political leader serving first Frederick and then Washington County in the Maryland House of Delegates.

The Funk house later because a hotel, after the National Pike was developed. During the mid 19th century it was known as South’s Hotel and is said to have hosted John Brown. In 1877, Atlas property is shown as owned by S. Baker.

Architecturally the house is one of a small group of true Colonial period buildings surviving in Washington County. It follows a modified traditional German plan, unlike several of the other early structures which utilized the central chimney continental plan.

HISTORY OF FUNKSTOWN, MARYLAND

Originally 88 acres (360,000 m2) were sold to Henry Funk by Frederick Calvert in 1754 and settled as Jerusalem.[1][2] Funck’s Jerusalem Town

The plan for a village named “Jerusalem,” bounded on three sides by the Antietam Creek, was unveiled by Jacob Funck in 1767. The town boasted 177 lots, each being 82 feet 6 inches wide and 231 feet in length with one exception, lot #43 which by necessity was smaller. Shortly afterward, lots were for sale and the town soon had fifteen log houses. Early residents referred to it as ‘Funck’s Jerusalem Town’ which became part of Washington County in 1776. Work on a comfortable stone house of the proprietor of Jerusalem Town was completed in 1769. Jacob Funck, his wife Ann, and their family of four girls and two boys moved into their new residence on lot #165, now designated as 35 West Baltimore Street. Since its very beginning, Funkstown was known for its mills. Their first mill was built in 1762. It was flour mill operated by Henry Funck. By 1785 Jerusalem was home for an iron furnace, brickyard, powder factory, grist and woolen mills and a host of inns and shops. The last mill built in 1859 was a flour mill which burned in September 1929. It was run by the Antietam Mill Company. Jacob Funck was a Washington County Representative to the Maryland House of Delegates, 1785-1787. He divested himself of all land holdings in Washington County in 1791. That year, he and his family moved to Jefferson County, Kentucky where they lived until his death at the age of 67 in 1794. Dr. Christian Borestler settled in Jerusalem around 1784. He brought with him 70 German families that settled in the community. Needless to say, German was the predominant language spoken. Catawba, Delaware, Cherokee and Powhatan Indians lived in and traveled through this area hunting, fishing and farming. Antietam Creek is named after these Native Americans. Funck’s Town – Funkstown The first post office was established in Funck’s Town on December 24, 1816. In 1823 the Old National Pike was built through Funck’s Town and the first of two stone arch bridges was constructed over the Antietam Creek. The first was built in 1823 by James Lloyd to allow traffic on the Old National Pike to pass over the creek on its way toward the Allegheny Mountains The Town was incorporated as “Funkstown” in 1840.

The Civil War Battle of Funkstown took place July 10, 1863, during the Gettysburg Campaign as Robert E. Lee‘s Army of Northern Virginia retreated toward Virginia in the week following the Battle of Gettysburg. Union forces of the Army of the Potomac attacked the rear guard of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during its retreat from Pennsylvania following the Battle of Gettysburg. A strong Confederate presence at Funkstown threatened any Union advance against Gen. Robert E. Lee’s position near Williamsport and the Potomac River as he retreated to Virginia after the Battle of Gettysburg. Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry, posted at Funkstown, posed a serious risk to the Federal right and rear if the Union army lunged west from Boonsboro. Stuart, meanwhile, determined to wage a spirited defense to ensure Lee time to complete fortifications protecting his army and his avenue of retreat. As Brig. Gen. John Buford’s Federal cavalry division cautiously approached Funkstown via the National Road on Friday morning July 10, 1863, it encountered Stuart’s crescent-shaped, three-mile-long battle line. It was Stuart’s first defensive battle since reentering Maryland. The high ground constituted Stuart’s extreme right, held by Preston Chew’s horse artillery. A nearby stone barn and barnyard wall proved a superb defensive position for the 34th Virginia Battalion’s dismounted cavalry. Col. Thomas C. Devin’s dismounted Union cavalry brigade attacked about 8:00 a.m. By mid-afternoon, with Buford’s cavalrymen running low on ammunition and gaining little ground, Col. Lewis A. Grant’s First Vermont Brigade of infantry arrived and jabbed at the Confederate center less than one mile away. Unbeknownst to the Vermonters, Gen. George T. Anderson’s Confederate brigade now faced them, the first time opposing infantry had clashed since the Battle of Gettysburg. By early evening, the Union Army began withdrawing south towards Beaver Creek. Stuart had kept the Federals at bay for yet another day. The day-long battle east of the road resulted in 479 casualties. The Chaney house served as a hospital. At the Keller home, Confederate Major Henry D. McDaniel, later the governor of Georgia, survived his wounds. Joseph Stonebreaker, a resident of Funkstown and witness of the event wrote: “The wounded were brought into town and Mrs. Chaney’s large dwelling was taken for a hospital. The Surgeons had a table in the yard under some trees and amputated arms and legs like sawing limbs from a tree. It was a terrible sight.” Soldiers from both sides were treated by residents of the town. Funkstown continued to grow in the twentieth century. However with the coming of railroads, the once bustling community of inns and mills became a quiet residential town. In 1919 J.C. Weisner began efforts to create a memorial for World War I casualties. In 1921, the Funkstown Memorial was erected at the main square. The western Maryland Community still reflects the charm and beauty that attracted the early German settlers. Many of the original historic houses and buildings are still in use as private homes, public buildings, quaint shops and businesses.

Welcome to our Historic Homes Marketing Group website. We are excited to launch our Historic Home Team nationally. Gary Gestson and his talented team of marketing experts have spent years crafting a historic home marketing program that successfully sells unique historic homes. In 2009, the National Association of Realtors acknowledged this success with an article “Own Your Niche“ featuring Gary Gestson and his ”niche marketing” success.

We now offer this marketing program to other real estate agents nationally in support their own real estate efforts. Realtors in good standing with their broker, who share our Historic Home Team’s love of these unique homes and want to “own their historic home niche” are welcome to apply to become a Historic Homes Marketing Specialist with our nationally recognized Historic Home Team.

Historic home sellers understand what it takes to sell their unique homes. This is what one Maryland home owner said -

I have been a settlement attorney for over 20 years, and am also a licensed real estate salesperson. I hired Long & Foster’s Gary Gestson to list my historic home and am glad I did. When the home was not generating much activity, and my previous “top” realtor wanted to reduce the price ANOTHER ten percent, I decided to go with a realtor who specializes in historic homes. Gary left the listing price alone, staged the property beautifully with the assistance of his top notch team, and marketed it with state of the art techniques. The home quickly sold at close to the listing price. Gary was very responsive when I called, he is extremely knowledgeable, and I would recommend him without hesitation.

Take a look at our Marketing Program and give us a call 1-866-437-8766, or visit Join Our Team.

HISTORY OF JEFFERSON, MARYLAND

Jefferson is an unincorporated community located in Frederick County, Maryland, established in 1774, incorporated as a town in 1831. However, a year later, in 1832, the citizens of the town decided that municipal government is unnecessary, thus, it was disincorporated.

According to archaeologist Mary F. Barse, Jefferson was initially laid out in 1774 on a 96-acre (390,000 m2) tract owned by Mrs. Eleanor Medley and called New Town. It contained 40 rectangular lots – 20 aligned on each side of MD 180 – stretching between what are now Lander Road and Old Middletown Road. In 1795, twenty-two additional lots were platted by Elias Delashmutt on the western end of the original section, and called New Freedom. It was not until 1831 that both sections were incorporated as Jefferson by the Maryland Legislature.[1]

Jefferson’s growth in the 19th century was due largely to traffic on the road between Frederick and the railroad town of Brunswick. Wagon traffic and livestock drives were frequent. Concomitantly, commercial development intensified to serve the surrounding farms as well as travelers. It was during this mid 19th century period of commercial growth during which Hemp’s Meats was established in 1849. This butchering shop has continuously served the local community under Hemp family ownership since it opened its doors in 1849.

As a center of agricultural mercantilism, throughout most of the late 18th and 19th century Jefferson was also home to a sizable population of slaves.

The Hagerstown and Frederick Railway linked Jefferson to Frederick and Hagerstown in 1907. However, MD 180 remained the only link to the closest steam powered rail station in Brunswick.

Examined historic maps (Griffith 1795; Bond 1858; Martenet 1865, 1885; Lake 1873; USGS1910) depict Jefferson on what is now MD 180 as early as 1795. It is designated Trap Town at the close of the 18th century by Griffith (1795). Local history suggests that the name derives from the large number of taverns operating at the time. Purportedly, taverns were situated at both ends of town. Consequently, a traveler could be “trapped” on the way in or out of town.[2]
