HISTORY
Beechersville, a small settlement founded in 1825 by David Beecher along the Conewago Creek, is illustrative of small industrial areas in early Adams County. As early as the 1770s, a carding and fulling mill had been erected in the area. David Beecher built a tannery in 1825 and in 1832 erected the Conewago Woolen Factory with Robert Morrison just a short walk from the house. The mill soon became an important industry in the area and produced cloth for clothing along with blankets and carpet. Always a keen business man, David built a paper mill around a quarter of a mile down the Conewago Creek in 1837. Later it was converted into a box board factory. The Conewago Paper Company, founded in 1873, later enlarged that factory and began producing straw printing paper.
By the middle of the1840’s Beecherstown was described as one of the busiest little hamlets in Upper Adams County and for 50 years the village was an active small industrial area.
As David Beecher was a well to do entrepreneur with a growing family, he added a two storey brick house to the front of his log home, the link from old to new can be seen in the doorway from the front to the middle bedroom which was clearly a window in the old log house. The 1850 Census of Butler Township describes David Beecher as a Merchant, with his real estate worth $20,000 making him wealthy by comparison to others.
The role of the house during the Battle of Gettysburg is unclear but it did lie on the advance route of a portion of the Confederate Army, its two wells and the house location near to the mills would have drawn the attention of the Rebel troops. Several Military items were unearthed during work in the rear garden.
David died in 1880 and his wife Anna seven years later. The house was sold by Public sale on Saturday, September 11th 1880 and was described as a “two story brick dwelling house with back building , frame stable, hog pen, carriage house, two wells of water and a variety of choice fruit, on about one half acre.”
The next owner of the house was Nash Griffith Camp, he was married to Julia Ann Amelia Hoover and was the Granddaughter of David Beecher. Nash was a Civil War veteran, a Major in the 165th PA Infantry Regiment.
